This course introduces the student to working vocabulary and the rules of pronunciation and basic grammar. The listening and speaking skills are emphasized with a gradual introduction of writing and reading techniques. All four skills are presented in context. The diverse cultures of the French-speaking world are also introduced. Completion of various types of homework assignments as well as good attendance are vital in order to succeed in this course.
This course continues the work begun in French 1, Level 2. The four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing continue to be introduced, in context, at an accelerated pace. The study of cultures of the French-speaking world continues, as well.
This a course designed for the highly motivated student who has done well in the previous study of the language. The four language skills will continue to be presented at an accelerated rate in order to achieve adequate proficiency. This course is conducted almost exclusively in French and includes further study of the French-speaking world. Any student thinking of applying to a four-year college and wishing to attain a practical degree of proficiency should consider taking a minimum of three semesters of the same language.
The prerequisite is a “C-” in French 2, Level 2.
This course is designed for the highly motivated student who has acquired a good command of the four language skills. The emphasis is on the use of language for active communication. The activities in this course are designed to help develop the student's ability to understand spoken French in various conversational situations and to help the student express him/herself in the target language accurately and resourcefully, both orally and in writing. This course includes further study of readings from history, culture and literature.

Honors French is offered to those students who have shown a high level of interest. It involves daily homework and is conducted on an accelerated basis so that students are prepared to continue in their basic skills. The cultural component will continue to be developed. Completion of all assignments and good attendance are essential to this course.

This intensive, accelerated course is designed for highly motivated students who will be taking the Advanced Placement Language Exam or the SAT II in French in their junior or senior year. A prerequisite of B- in French 4 Honors is required to take this course. This is a full year course.

The diverse cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world are further developed. Completion of oral and written homework, class projects and good attendance are mandatory.
Honors Portuguese II is offered to motivated students who have shown a high level of interest and achievement in Port. I. This course is geared to those students who intend to go on to high level courses in Portuguese. The four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing along with the study of cultures of the Portuguese-speaking World are presented at an accelerated pace.

This course is designed for the highly motivated student who wishes to further his/her proficiency in Portuguese. Readings of short stories, poetry, prose, and newspaper articles will be introduced and students will be asked to express themselves in the target language accurately and resourcefully both in oral and written form based on these readings. The course is conducted entirely in Portuguese.
11301 SPANISH I
Honors Spanish 1 will be offered to those students who have shown a high level of motivation. It will involve more homework and will be conducted on an accelerated basis to insure that students will be prepared to continue their studies in a college bound language program.
Students who elect this course should have goals to excel and work at an accelerated pace. This course is set up for students to continue with their chosen language and to develop language skills on a higher level of achievement in college work.
Students electing Level 1 courses are required to carry a B- average or better in their previous year of the language.
11321 SPANISH III
This is an accelerated third year course designed for the highly motivated student who has received a “B-” or better in the previous year of Spanish. The four language skills continue to be present at an accelerated pace in order to achieve a basic proficiency. This course is conducted almost exclusively in Spanish and includes further study of civilization and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.
The course is conducted in Spanish at an accelerated pace and is offered to the highly motivated student. It utilizes the basic language patterns taught in Spanish I, II, and III with a concentration on using the language to discuss various readings on history, culture, and literary short stories, prose, and poetry. A background in the geography, history, and literary trends in Spanish-speaking countries as well as a look into the field of Spanish art is presented and discussed in Spanish.
This is a fast paced course designed to continue the development of a student's oral and written abilities in Spanish. Major emphasis will be placed on the development of a student's aural/oral skills as well as their reading and writing skills. Previously taught grammar points will be reintroduced and expanded upon along with the teaching of more complex grammatical skills. Students will be introduced to short stories, poems, and fables in Spanish and students will continue their study of the History, Culture, and Civilization of the Spanish-speaking World. Emphasis will be placed on the Civil War of Spain, Spanish Artists as well as Contemporary Artists in the Music World. Students will be required to increase their Technology Skills in the Language Lab and will produce their own Children's Story Book in Spanish and also create their own Video Production in Spanish along with the creation of Power Point Presentations.
Students must have a B- in Spanish IV to take this course.
This is a full year course.
Honors Latin 1 is offers to those students who have shown a high level of interest, motivation, and achievement. It will involve more homework and will be conducted on an accelerated basis in order to insure that students will be prepared to continue their studies in a college language program. This course is an introduction to the Latin language with an emphasis on vocabulary, sentence patterns, grammar, and syntax. Emphasis is on reading and writing with a less emphasized oral component. Roman culture, history, geography, and mythology are introduced. There is a continual, comparative connection with English and other Romance languages.
Honors Latin II is offered to students who have completed Latin I and have shown a high level of interest, motivation, and achievement. The prerequisite is a grade of B or better in Honors Latin I. The course will involve more homework and will be conducted on an accelerated basis in order to insure that students will be prepared to continue their studies in a college language program. This course is a seamless continuation of Latin I, with a continuing emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Emphasis is on reading and writing with a less emphasized oral component. Roman culture, history, geography, and mythology are expanded. There is a continual, comparative connection with English and other Romance languages.
Honors Latin III is offered to students who have completed Latin I and II and have shown a high level of interest, motivation, and achievement. The prerequisite is a grade of B or better in Latin I and II. The course will involve more homework and will be conducted on an accelerated basis in order to insure that students will be prepared to continue their studies in a college language program. The course extensively reviews the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of Latin I and II while introducing more complex constructions, grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, primarily in the context of prose, drama, dialogue, and poetry. A major emphasis is on reading for understanding. Roman culture, history, geography, and mythology are expanded. There is a continual, comparative connection with English and other romance languages.
This is an introductory course for the serious and highly motivated student. The four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, which are presented in context, are introduced. The culture of the German speaking world is integrated into the curriculum. Completion of daily homework assignments as well as good attendance are essential.
This course stresses points of grammar, idiomatic expression, and oral-aural comprehension. This course reinforces what the student has learned in German I through special exercises including compositions, additional readings, magazines, and cultural video presentations. High concentration in oral presentations and development of listening skills via language lab are an intricate part of this course.
11204 PORTUGUESE FOR HEALTH CAREERS
Portuguese for Health Careers presents several topics related to the health field. It is recommended for students who are seeking employment upon graduation in health services. Each unit contains extensive vocabularies in a specific topic in order for the student to achieve the necessary communicative skills. An integral part of the course is role playing by students.
A minimum of three years of a language and/or native speakers with the consent of the department chair /or a written exam will place students in this course. It is expected that students experience some type of business and/or community involvement, so that they have a better insight into the requirements of languages in these fields. Openings are limited to internship availability. The consent of Dept. Chairperson is necessary. Job mentoring, shadowing, and internships are part of this course.
11304 SPANISH for HEALTH CAREERS
This course is offered for those students who are interested in working in a pathway that involves the medical field. Terminology and course content are geared to help students' function in a career that deals with any of the health and or human service fields.
A minimum of three years of a language and/or native speakers with the consent of the department chair /or a written exam will place students in this course. It is expected that students experience some type of business and/or community involvement, so that they have a better insight into the requirements of languages in these fields. Openings are limited to internship availability. The consent of Dept. Chairperson is necessary. Job mentoring, shadowing, and internships are part of this course.
Students who wish to serve as aides to set up equipment and assist teachers in the World Language Lab can apply for these courses. Students must be computer literate and have enough fluency in the language to understand the programs run in the lab.
Students must see World Languages Department head to register for this course.
Students who wish to assist bilingual students or teachers of bilingual students and be assigned within the classroom setting or in an ARC may request this course which meets 3 times a week over a 6 day cycle. Students must have successfully passed two years of a World Language and must be fluent in French, Portuguese or Spanish.

11244 MUSIC THROUGHOUT PORTUGAL
This course is an introduction to the culture of Portugal through the music of the various regions of Portugal . This course will study the folkloric, traditional and popular music styles of Portuguese music. Throughout the course, the music will be linked to the different cultural events in the different regions of Portugal .
Students electing to take this course must have successfully completed two years of Portuguese in high school with a B-Average.
11254 MUSIC IN THE LUSOPHONE WORLD
This course is an introduction to the different styles of music in the Lusophone (Portuguese Speaking) World. This course will identify the music characteristics and influences of each country. Students electing to take this course must have successfully completed the first semester course
