This course is designed to provide the student with a sound background in civics, personal citizenship, and the workings of the U.S. government, along with world geography, leadership principles, and U.S. History until 1859. Military customs and traditions are an integral part of this course.
Academic Expectations:

• Understand basic fundamentals of leadership and citizenship
• Effectively work as a team member in basic leadership situations
This course provides the student with fundamental knowledge of maritime history and nautical science. Basic elements of national security democratic system of government, as well as occupational fields within the Department of the Navy, are discussed. U.S. History is also taught.

• Function effectively in leadership role-playing
This course provides the student with a sense of the historical background of the nation and its democratic processes. The principles of leadership are the subject of extensive discussion with frequent practical experience at the platoon and company levels. Time is also devoted to astronomy and the concepts of international law. U.S. History, 1946 – present is studied and U.S. strategy and the role of sea power are introduced.

• Be able to solve leadership and military history situational problems
This course includes all aspects of 75122 with the additional responsibility of research papers and/or projects. Leadership skills are developed to the platoon level, and an increased level of self-discipline is expected. The practical leadership skills include being a mentor for Naval Science 1 cadets.

75131 HONORS NAVAL SCIENCE III
This course is primarily the same as 75121 with an emphasis on research papers and projects to demonstrate the concepts and knowledge learned. Cadets increase leadership skills in their company and in the battalion staff. At this level, cadets will be introduced to job performance evaluation skills, not only relating to themselves but also to lower ranking cadets.

• Be able to effectively discuss basic national political and national security situations
• Have a basic understanding of our universe
This unique course in leadership and management is comparable to a college-level course in organizational behavior. Cadets will examine leadership by learning about human behavior and group dynamics. Numerous autobiographical and biographical selections will be read and discussed to examine leadership styles in the modern world. Vignettes of situations occurring in typical NJROTC units will be studied and examined to reveal typical problems facing leaders. Cadets will be involved in independent study and provide leadership for NS1 cadets.

• Effectively teach a leadership subject to fellow students
• Function effectively in a senior leadership position
75314 DRILL/RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP
This course emphasizes drills and ceremonies of the armed services and air rifle marksmanship. Students gain an understanding of the customs and traditions, as well as learning the development of traditional ceremonies and parades. Half of this course is devoted to teaching the students fundamentals of three-position, air rifle marksmanship.
Academic Expectations:
• Perform effectively in precision drill movements
• Understand rifle safety fundamentals
• Perform effectively in sword manual movements
This course provides an in-depth look at what leadership is and how one learns to maximize his/her individual abilities in this area. This course emphasizes the basics of good leadership: personal example, moral responsibility, good management skills, and interpersonal skills. This course is designed for the Naval Science cadets who have completed Naval Science I and II and are in their Junior or Senior year.
Academic Expectations:
• Effectively perform uniform inspection
• Demonstrate an understanding of leadership principles
• Perform effectively as a discussion leader in leadership roundtables.
