Guidance Calendar of Events
Leaving middle school and moving to the high school level can be one of the most challenging experiences that you will have in your life. Finding your way around the building, meeting new peers and teachers, having more assignments in your classes can cause you to feel overwhelmed. Right now you may have many questions about how you can navigate through your first year. The choices that you make now affect your future in the type of college you will enter, the type of job that you will have, and how much satisfaction you will have in your life. Here are some suggestions for how you can be successful in the 9th grade and future years at Durfee...
☺Make sure that you are in the right classes. If you believe that some classes are too difficult or easy for you, see your guidance counselor to discuss other options. For any other questions, you can talk with teachers, counselors, or your vice principal.
☺Completing all of your assignments, including homework, is important to be able to understand the material.
☺Having good attendance is one of the best things you can do to help yourself in your classes. High school classes move at a faster pace than in middle school, so you need to be in school to learn the lessons.
☺The students that do best in high school are the ones that get involved. We have many extracurricular activities, including clubs and sports, so try them out. You might find you like something new!
Students: Are you the first one in your family to go to college (the first “generation” to go to college)??? Do you qualify for free or reduced lunch??? Are you planning to attend college in the future??? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Upward Bound or Talent Search programs may be for you. Both programs are offered at Bristol Community College (in walking distance right down Elsbree street). For more information, call 508-678-2811 extension 2324. You can meet with representatives from the program in the cafeteria during lunch periods, or go to the Guidance/Registrar’s Office (across from the cafeteria).
