Electronic Device Policy To Be
Strictly Enforced

Starting on March 31, 2008 any and all electronic devices (ex. cell phones, ipods, earphones, cameras, sidekicks) seen by staff at B.M.C. Durfee High School will be confiscated. NO WARNING AND NO REMINDERS! If they are visible in the building, they will be taken.

The items will be bagged and locked in a safe in the main office. Confiscated items will be held for one week unless a parent/guardian picks them up.

The reason for this "Zero Tolerance" enforcement of the regulation in our student handbook page 76 is due to the recent surge in behavior issues and distractions from the learning process, as well as, theft and loss. It's not the responsibility of the school to chase around contraband brought into the building. I suggest as of March 31, 2008 you leave these items at home or you will lose them.

Thank you,
Ralph Olsen
Principal

Cell Phones and other electronic devices

The use of electronic devices in our society has become commonplace for students and adults. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices have in many instances become a detriment to the learning environment at B.M.C. Durfee High School. As such, the following regulations will apply:

  • Cell phones, pagers, beepers, CD players, DVD players, radios, picture cameras, camera phones, camcorders, laser pointers, and other electronic devices identified by the school administration must not be audible or visible during the school day and must be turned off. Phone calls of an emergency nature will take place in medical or through the respective grade offices.
  • Compact music players are not to be used in the classroom without the explicit consent of the supervising teacher.
  • PDA’s, graphing calculators and other handheld devices shall not be used for exchanging information, personal e-mail, playing games, or chatting unless sanctioned by a classroom teacher as part of an instructional exercise.
  • Students who wish to bring these items to school do so at their won risk

Note: Students who ignore these rules may have these items confiscated by any administrator. Blatant refusal to comply with the requests of teachers and/or administrators is insubordination and subject to more severe disciplinary action.
