Record-breaking Season For Boys Winter Track Team
It's been quite a season for the Boys Indoor Track Team, which has repeatedly re-written the record book, including the demolition of some longstanding marks.
Of particular note are Robert Yarbough and Charles Kurgatt. Yarbough recently emerged as the Massachusetts Division 1 shot put champ, when he reset his school record with a throw of 54' 9.5". He was also part of the shot put relay team, along with Jesse Rubio and Timothy Helley, which established a new school mark with a 128' 9" showing.
Kurgatt, a fine all-around athlete, continues to break his own marks set in the 1000 meters. He currently holds the sophomore, junior, senior and school (2:33.81) records in the event. Kurgatt also established the school record in the 800 meters (1:59.99), as well as taking part in the school record setting sprint medley relay team, along with Roman Myrick, Adam Correia and Jordan Lopes (3:40.34). Kurgatt finished 6th at the Division 1 State Meet and 8th at the All-state Meet.
The high jump relay team of Cameron Pontes, Ron Thomas and Zach Burrell was also exceptional, first winning the Division 1 state title and then following that up by duplicating the feat at the elite All-State Championships. The group's mark of 18' 1 3/4" is a school record. Thomas placed 5th at the Division Meet and 4th at the all-state meet in the high jump.
The other school records set this year include Burrell in the long jump (20' 11.5") and Steve Souza in the 400 meters (55.43). Zachery Caron also established a new sophomore mark in the 55 meters with a time of 7 seconds flat.
