Home of the Hilltoppers
Girls Basketball 2007-2008 Preview
Despite its young nucleus, the Durfee girls basketball team will try to tackle the tough job of playing a difficult schedule and establish itself as a premier hoop program.
The Lady Hilltoppers enter their second season under head coach Tony Martin. Durfee finished with a 13-9 overall mark a year ago, a season which ended with a South Sectional quarter-finals loss to Big 3 Conference rival Brockton.
From that team, the Toppers graduated three of their top six players in what was a very short rotation. Leading the brief list of returners is senior Alex Fiola, a 5-foot-8 shooting guard, who recently signed a letter of intent to play at defending Division 2 national champion Southern Connecticut State University.
The other returning starters are sophomore point guard Katie MacDonald and 5-10 sophomore center, Lauren Fiola. Helping the cause is the return of junior guard Julie Plasski. She missed all of last season with a knee injury.
Other players expected to step into key roles are Hannah Facchiano and Cyré Coleman, both of whom are up from the junior varsity, as well as 5-11 freshman Toni Fenn. There is also a mix of players looking to earn a job with the varsity. Among the names on that list are junior Sarah Correia, sophomores Kaitlin Almeida and Jordan Prescott and freshman Denisha Parks.
“As you can see, we have a very young team. We’re working on our team chemistry, learning our roles and understanding what it takes to play at the varsity level day in and day out,” said Coach Martin. “We’ve got some high expectations. We want to be competitive against any team in the state of Massachusetts and we feel we have one of the toughest schedules in the state. We’d like to be a Top 20 team in the state someday. So, we have some lofty goals.”
