This course is designed to foster individual creativity based upon studio experiences in art while using the elements and principles of design. It is a rigorous course in which students are challenged. Various concepts in art will be explored and analyzed, providing a structure and framework needed in the creation of original works of art. This course will also allow students numerous hands-on experiences in which they will be able to explore various drawing and painting materials, techniques, concepts and subjects matter as well as collage, printmaking and clay modeling. As students develop a more comprehensive vocabulary in art, they will be able to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas about and though the arts.
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Art and is designed for students who are interested in continuing their education in the visual arts. This course will instill a comprehensive view of the visual arts through hands-on activities related to investigation and experimentation. Students will participate in class discussions and critiques.
Prerequisite:
• Grade of “C” in previous year's art course.
(5) Successful completion of Introduction to Art.
This course is a continuation of Intermediate Art. It is an Advanced level course and is designed for the student who expresses a strong and serious desire to study art. Students are expected to learn to express themselves conceptually and visually through more advanced drawing, painting, modeling and printmaking techniques.
Prerequisite:
( 6) Successful completion of Intermediate Art. Grade of “B” in previous year's art course.
53214 POTTERY I – (Introduction)
This course is designed to teach basic knowledge of clay materials, and processes while fostering individual creativity and self-expression through 3D clay experiences. Students will actively engage in art production, history, criticism, and aesthetic experiences unique to ceramics and clay media. Students will develop and apply: technical knowledge and skills, critical thinking skills and creative problem solving skills. Personal artistic expression is strongly encouraged.
Prerequisite :
• Passing grade of C in previous year's art course.
• Students may be required to purchase some supplies
This course is designed as an introduction to basic black and white photography. It is offered as a five-credit elective to any member of the senior class. In this course students will construct a simple pin-hole camera, use their own adjustable (lens) 35mm cameras, learn how to develop black and white film and create photographic images using black and white photographic paper.
Students will be introduced to the history of photography and the camera, students will study the works and contributions made by famous photographers, and learn how to select and compose subjects in the camera lens. Visual acuity in presentation will be emphasized.
In addition, students will be responsible for completing several classroom assignments, learning proper presentation and matting of photographs, creating a portfolio of their work, and demonstrating knowledge in photography through class quizzes and tests administered by the instructor .
Prerequisite:
• Passing grade of “C” in previous year's art course.

This course is concerned with students who are seriously considering a career in art and who are planning to continue their education in art beyond high school. The objective of this course in to help students develop their own personal mode of artistic expression and to involve them in projects which will challenge and develop their critical and analytical ability. Students in this course will be required to complete several art projects in an original manner, to participate in the creation of one work of art for permanent display, and to develop a portfolio of their artworks.
Prerequisite: (7) Minimum Grade of B in Advanced Art.
The Portfolio Art program is for highly motivated seniors who are developing a portfolio that can be used to apply to art school. This course is open to any Junior or Senior Visual Arts Student who has successfully completed Art III. This course is designed for the serious Visual Arts student who intends to apply to Arts School upon graduation from B.M.C. Durfee High School . Students in this course will collect & organize all previous artworks and create new works to develop a complete Portfolio for Art School review. Students signing up for this course should be self-motivated and willing to take on the rigor of portfolio development.
The scope of work for this class is equivalent to that of an introductory college course in studio art. This course, in conjunction with Advanced Art, provides an opportunity to prepare a portfolio for admission to art school and to acquire knowledge of the professional art world. Students in this course are required to work outside of the classroom, to maintain an art sketchbook, and to complete weekly drawing homework assignments. Students should be aware that this course involves significantly more time and effort than a studio art course and is not for the casually interested student.
Students enrolling in this course may consider taking an additional higher level Visual Arts course to allow for extra studio time for creating the necessary artworks needed for a complete portfolio.
Prerequisite: (7) Minimum grade of B in Advanced Art.
This course is a continuation of Pottery I, with further exploration of the theme-based concepts, an expansion of knowledge and experience in construction, glazing, decorating, and firing techniques. Students continue to engage in art production, history, criticism, and aesthetic experiences unique to ceramics. Students experience an in-depth introduction to the potter's wheel.
Prerequisite:

(4) Minimum of “B” in Pottery 1.
This course is designed for students who have successfully met the requirements of Pottery I & II. This accelerated course focuses on advanced methods, materials, and techniques. Students participate in art production, history, criticism, and aesthetic activities in clay media. Students are challenged to creatively express themselves, create self-directed goals, use advanced critical and analytical thinking skills, exploring challenging concepts and ideas and demonstrate high level craftsmanship and technical skill.

( 2) Students may be required to purchase some supplies.
(8) Minimum of “B” in Pottery II.
